YELLOW PAPER

Notes of the middle way, with yellow in the middle of the
solar spectrum as seen by the human eye.
The yellow path in ancient Chinese astronomical tradition and
as comported to the red path: the ecliptic, or path of the
yellow sun to the extension of the earth' equator, the red
earth--or how was it? The yellow earth (central, correct) and
the red sun as at sunset (Amide, Amanita, Amitabha).

There is a third great circle coordinate in the system for reckoning time and space, which would be the polar, longitudinal point of reference and all paths crossing it. Riemannian geometry (John C. Lilly, M.D., Simulation of God, "Prologue"), alternatives to Euclid's 5th postulate, the Bridge of asses, pons asinorum, crossed by Jesus on Palm Sunday, entering the Heavenly City (the name it called "Jerusalem"), its space lies within the bounds of eternity, as all Orthodox Jews hold, in contrast to the politically motivated Zionists who would have the geographical, temporal site equated with the idea of space, pure and eternal before the time came for time to begin (as G. Spencer Brown sez, C. E. Rolt writes in his introduction to the translation (HOMAGE TO MARPA) of the Divine Names by Dionysos the PseudoAreopagite. (See transcript of AUM Conference, Vernal Equinox, Esalen, 1973, by Sir Walter de Clifford-Bran & yours truly).

The Chinese oracle based on MINERAL stuff (Aristotle's hule) we might surmise, was astronomical and served to fix time of consultation for the other oracles. It's about time. It was consulted using the jade (mineral) pi and chun, or slating tube and rotating disc. (N. Duchamp, Rotating Demispheres, 1936-). Jade was chosen because of its toughness, and hardness, This mineralogical green balloon was popped by the introduction of the diamond drill with Dhu'l Qarnayn or, Alexander the Great, as documented by Laufer in his essay The Diamond: A study in Chinese and Hellenistic Folklore.

Reading of the mineral oracle then would give the shaman/priests of the Shang/Yin dynasty a fixed point of reference in time, by providing angular measurements of the sun with respect to distant stars. In order to measure this accurately, they would have to calculate the precessional nutation--a periodic "wobble" in the earth's natural motion. (Newton, Principia---as Brown indicates, the REAL Principia, not the other one which today is more familiar when called by the name, Russell-Whitehead having called the name again. In this instance the value of a name called again is not precisely identical with the value of the name called). The cross of the red and the yellow path: ecliptic and equator, which give the position of the sun at EITHER of the equinoctal points of the year, with respect to distant stars. One then needs the great circle, the polar coordinate of longitude, in order to ascertain one's position on the surface of this local oblate spheroid. Then, when we know where we are here on the earth, and where the earth is with respect to the sun, and where the sun is with respect to the galaxy (as generally, popularly understood), we may proceed to consult the other oracles, namely the Animal and Vegetable ones.

They would be the Tortoise shell oracle, having to do with writing (Hermes cheloon, the lyre, LYRA, 7 strings, Echelon, the 7th consequence Laws of Form, etc. 7-color "rainbow") and the I Ching, which uses yarrow stalks (Artemisia Siberica) 7 x 7.

All this is neither here nor there and would be but a warming to the topic were it not for sensing a "nigger in the woodpile" as my father would say, but as we may not say anymore, mindful of the social context. But is it only the social context which blinds us from seeing the "shadow" or however we choose to characterize the "blind"? (There is a witty self-referential writing about "the yellow path" on yellow paper. Would the form, i.e. the color of the stock, the paper, the material form as a token of the space which is then marked be preserved in the publishing of this--and by this, these marks in ink on this paper, as tokens of some words, which are themselves not spoken but thought, and which thoughts are only most summarily indicated by the words, etc.? How to publish a perception. And why? Must it surely be of consequence, and do more than confuse those who are seeking the Dharma, by tamely setting straight a detail or so, or offering as scholarship the subtlest of intuitions, the halluciantions of meaning, the fantasies of =?) (See: Paul Frankl on why write.)

When we receive instruction on the triple nature of anything, when we hear of Ouspensky's Laws of Three, Gurdjieff re-Gurdjitated, or of the Triple Kaya doctrine--we note the "fourth" or the "primal" element, which we may liken to our syncretic function, or the elusive (Eleusive) shadow/spirit.

What was the fourth oracle? Or the "first"? Did the shaman/ priests perform some self-referential function before the formal consultations began? Did they get stoned? On what? Here perhaps we come close to it: the mysterious LING CH'I, the Elixir of the Gods, Ambrosia, product of trees, the Tree the Cosmic Tree (Milky Way) and the tree of life 3:1, and we know that the Tree is the Truth, the Dharma: trivial, Y, the system of branching paths, either or choices, binary systems.

How then are we to regard the complementary system of information organization: the Net or Web? In computer programming it simply will not do to think in tree terms excluding net functions. Nor does it seem to work out very well in practical situations in day-to-day life, among ordinary mortals, etc. Things may be imagined as being organized (in a sense of relating to an organic whole system, syncretic unity, the whole as more than the sum of its parts (Buckminster Fuller, with analogues to Group Theory - Kayser, Eddington in Newman) according to the model of a tree OR/AND that of a net, web. In our culture the tree is associated with the truth. This is mapped linguistically, etymologically, and it is shared with other cultures--especially those sharing the Proto-IndoEuropean language base. It is also the case (or so it appears) in the shallower space of our social conventions, canons of taste, decorum: things alluded to perhaps but not said. These obscurations, however pleasant they do make life by rounding off the edges and smoothing surfaces of consciousness, do not necessarily make for good science, mathematics, logic, or electrical circuitry. And so most systems employing the convention of Brown's First Canon (INTENTION: In general, what is not allowed is forbidden), that is to say, in most systems employing injunctive language (rather than descriptive, discursive or imaginary, speculative languages) we may introduce any term, element, operation, or whatever, irrespective of the cultural and social associations, so long as we do so meaningfully in terms of the matrix already introduced. We thus imagine we start building such systems with a tabula rasa. This important idea and its precise formulation may be studied with reference to the Meideval Latin tradition in E. R. Curtius' Excursis, European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages.

In La Rue's Meanings, we read the NO Brown quote on the web of lies as woven, the weaver's trade, Kathy Kaufmann, the METIS, or intelligence of Odysseus, full of odium, polymetis, much worked over and woven-in. The spider is a web-weaver and scary to children (Black Widows, with red hourglasses on their underside, cannibal-lovers; however, in entomology, simply so voracious that there is no emotional "psychological" bind between the nymph and her mate; she will attack and eat anything the size of a male spider in her web, especially if it looks as good to eat as a male spider, and so those male spiders who are quick and do not languish on the web of conception are indeed able to escape). Athena is the Wanderer's protector. We need some more weaving: Who invents it? Why there is the Northern God Wotan/Woden/Odin, after whom Wednesday is named and known in Mediterranean climes as Hermes, Mercury, Thoth. He is manifested in Attic drama through the personage of the messenger, the barker, the psychopomp, conductor. He arrives at the beginning of the Oddysey to conduct the hero from the Land of the Dead (Calypso's Isle) along the weaving way back and forth home again. The hero may be seen as the incarnation of Hermes. Just so Prometheus, and all culture-bringers: Oannes in the Persian Gulf and on Babylonian cylinder seals. (See: Intelligent Life in the Universe, Sagan & Shklovsky.)

In the I Ching, he is seen as 56, Lü the Wanderer, wandering like a shuttlecock, woof. Wotan plucks three hairs from the tail of the Nightmare. It is the Old Grey Mare, herself. He braids these into a skein. From the three: one. Thus Shakespeare's three witches in MacBeth as the three crones, triple aspect of the Moon goddess: Maiden/Nymph/Crone, only here all-black as a New Zealand international side.

And what are the hairs that are woven into one? No doubt the three different stories told of the same event. Or the scholarly blind descriptions of the elephant braided by the littbe boy who could see, although he did not have the pandits' mastery of the words. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed is king. And who was the one-eyed? When the land was the cave, and Odysseus the krypto-sufi was in there with all the other sheep, King was Polyphemus, whose fame was widely known. And he was a cannibal as were the inhabitants of the Upper Cave at Chou Kou T'ien, whose name we call Sinanthropus Pekininensis. So the Big O puts out his eye with a firebrand. (Bran/Kronos/Saturn, the god of good measure and limitations, the burnt one, Bruno--Giordano 1600 AD).

This Pinchonesque weaving is why "No text authored by Robert Graves was allowed to be read for credit in a classics course at Cal in 1960." We know, weaving is the lie. Get to the point! Information search utilizing a tree grammar access is very efficient if it hits right the first time. But there is hit and miss, which can go on for a long time unless some parameters are drawn. So inter-programmed with a field-search or web-function grammar, areas of higher probabilities can be more efficiently searched, and then, narrowed in upon before finally accessing to point. (See: Christopher Wells-‑memory function and paradigms related to Process Neural Architecture, January 1, 1975).

Leucadia--the White Cliffs from which sacrifices to Apollo dove or were thrown into the Adriatic, to swim to Italy, or to play among the porpoises, the sea-pork, orcas, a.k.a. Gadarene "swine", no more pigs than the Surara Madhava served to the Buddha by his messenger of Death Devadutta was porkchops. Al Capp, Lil Abner. Hammus Alababus, the Schmoo.

The idea of translation. Translating texts. 3 stories are first evidence of Buddha legends translated into Arabic, c. AD 800, via Middle Persian from Sanskrit/ Balawhar and Būdāsf. Early non-Christian form of stories which become the legend of Barlaam and Joasaph, translated probably by Manichaeans, paraphrased into Georgian (Gurdjieff!) 9th century, then into Greek (Lang; Kuhn; Peri).

KING'S GREY HAIR. While enjoying splendors of this life, the king sees a grey hair on his face in the mirror (speculum). Memento mori. Variant of stories about devadutta, "messengers of death" classically in Makhadeva Jataka, Nimi Jataka etc. The King then forswears raja yoga to become holy man.

Devadutta  =  rasul-al-mawt. The idea of messenger of death as grey: Pale horse, pale rider. The hair as alive yet no nerve sensors; it can be cut off. Lady Grecian hair formula, age as an adversary/ally--Don Juan, Casteneda. Apollo as grey wolf; his golden wand traded to Hermes for the lyre, becomes the Cadeuceus, twined about with snakes mating—which seen by Tiresias transforms him into female consciousness for nine years (cf. the nine days and nights Wotan hangs on Yggdrasil).

Wotan braids hair (3 of 'em) from the Nightmare's tail, to invent rope, twine--Ariadne's clew, leading Theseus (St. George of Cappadocia, Al Khidr, Dragon-slayer Apollo who overcomes the  Python, See: Fontenrose) into and out of the labyrinth--mysteries of birth, obstetrics. Apollo as god of medicine, the scalpel making clean distinctions as with Manjusri and the fiery sword, ie, sterile, as well as alchemicaly tempered (Temperance = Tarot arcanum XIV, the ART, blinded as "wrath," VIBRATION, rainbow). The sharp and clean edge (Occam's razor, Sword of Gnosis, the 1st distinction - John Lilly, Prologue) cuts the umbilicus AFTER two knots have been tied:  square, not "granny" knots, ie. in accord with right reason, not old wives tales. Thus the practical application of mythology in the guidebook to Reality for kids.

The umbilicus at Delphi (Delphys = womb, Delphis = dolphin); Delphi is the cleft, gorge, the cunt of the earth and sacred to all Greeks, as Gortyna on Krete. The Temple of Apollo, taken over by him after his rise from subterranean Smianthos, mouse (grey!) fed to python, coiled around eggs as the omphalos occasionally about the foetus, requiring surgical action.

The boss, button as a mushroom. Earlier Delphic temple to Dionysos (mushroom, datura, then wine 7C BC), the dying and returning god recorded in Euripides' Bacchae; still at Delphi when Apollo goes Hyperborean, during the rainy months 1/3 of the year. (See: La Rue on Amanita muscaria, Daphne/Apollo.) The idea of the TREE; It's also a bridge to Wotan, the ash tree, hobby horse. La Rue's PhD on messengers in Greek drama. Hermes as information/communication, the embodiment of human speech, now thought to be much earlier, paleoanthropologically. Leaky finds Lake Rudolf: early large cranial capacity, sufficient for speech maybe 3-4 million years ago developing. Catalog 1470.

Messenger of death is about time. The Morai, Fates, three crones, or Graeae from whom Perseus (monster-slayer archetype: Athene) gets the helmet of invisibility. The CAP: phrygian, orgone, Dogon, Tibetan, Pinocchio, Duncecap, psilocybin mushroom cap, bishops' mitre, the "mitre" from Mitra/Mithra; K. Demarest sez it's from ichtyform Babylonian/Sumerian tradition (chap. 23 in Consciousness and Reality). The white crown of Upper Egypt: fox skin when associated with Dionysos in Phygia. Of course as il Papa is Bishop of the see of St. Peter, the BIG fisherman, Fisher King, Fisher of Men, his tiara triple-crown is in mitre form. Three rings of Saturn/Bran/Kronos. Body-Purity and Flavor on Ballyntines. Mathematically: conic sections. And the pine cone is Dionysos, planted in vineyards, from which hangs the sacrificial victims--hanging gives a hard-on, therefore fertility reference? Icarius first made wine, then gave it to shepherds (sufis) Mt. Pantelicys (five wolves?) near Marathon, who failed to it mix with water (datura, mushroom tradition?) got drunk and killed their benefactor "seeing double" (World of duality as referred to in Buddhist psychology, Samsara, "schizophrenia"(?) re: Taoist, Gnostic world systems). Dog Meara led daughter to Icarius' burial site under the pine--she hanged: swings.

Note recurrent tropes. Tree-hanging, ropes, cords, lines. Pine cone, conic sections: the coil of energy moving in space, as in the path of a photon emitted from a hot body--"continuous rainbow" (see J. Lilly). Only at the quantum level... Star associations: Mera a Procyon; Icarius = Bootes, Erigone = Virgo (R. Graves, The Greek Myths # 79). Masks hung--refer to theater, Dionysos. Icarius - Icarus - Car (Carmenta). Long-haired effeminate Dionysos maybe confused with girls. Ariadne dolls, fertility. Hagia Triads terracotta swing. Attis the Phrygian castrated under a pine. Verb "to pine". PINEAL gland (not bilaterally symmetrical). Priam's wife Hecuba (= Hekate, triple moon goddess) transformed into a dog, given the name Maera. Oeneus given the vine by Dionysos; advised later to mix with water.

Is the Greek mythology so dusty and irrelevant? Or are the psychological types still with us: in the language, the culture? A Tibetan Nyingma Relief Foundation pamphlet, Tibetan Aid Project  says: "The mystery religions of ancient Greece and Egypt, or Europe's own medieval religious heritage are now only dusty museum relics. We bravely put our time and money into attempts to save the whales...where will there be time to save the cultural heritage of Tibet?"

Stern & Walzer provide a version of Bodhisattva (Jataka) story unknown in Buddhist versions, though similar, "the Arabic version restores to us a lost Buddhist story." (p. 6). Second story: Skull at royal tomb; a king or pauper? in Death, equal. (Related to Alexander story: Dust now fills eye sockets which were insatiable before, while alive.)

Third story: Prince flees, refuses to return to state from which he escaped. Buddha story version: when born takes three (or seven) steps. The baby says "will be agile, become old, die." He leaves the palace later, sees a sick man, old man, and corpse. Fourth element; "When he entered his home he threw himself on his back and he looked at the wood of the roof of the house and said: "What was that one day?" They answered him: "It was a tree which grew, then it was wood, then it was cut to pieces, then this house was built, then this wood was laid upon it." Of this fourth encounter we find no parallel in the Jataka stories.

Like the threes parts of the whole in the marked state, and the fourth in the form. Brown's calculus in the second degree distinction, with quadrature. We map this to LIFE with non-life, or non-sentience in the form. Therefor, in the marked state we will expect three, not just two forms. These would be animal and vegetable, and a third category of living form, sentience. It turns out that there are life forms which may be gathered in a neither/nor, or better both/and grouping: the CATALYSTS, most active forms, most alive, quick:

ANIMAL        "PROTISTA"
                      +
MINERAL      VEGETABLE

The "Catalyst" (PROTISTA) category effects change of consciousness, and may be imagined as a mapping of the imaginary function in mathematics of the numerical sort, represented by the square-root of minus one, or "i." In mythology, identified with Dionysos, one of the three Great Gods honored at Eleusis (alwways three, and always the same three together: DEMETER = Vegetable (grain of pearl barley, three of which = one inch!); KORE, PERSEPHONE = Animal (White ivory goddess of mammoth hunt); and DIONYSOS, God of ecstasy, (mushrooms, fermentation, serpents, etc.)

We see how it is all tied together now. The serpents effect a sex-change in Tiresias. They are animal aspects of the vegetable vine, and so both of these FORMS; lineal, hair-like, snake-like, tendrils, vines, fibrous structures become associated with Dionysos and cross out of their respective "kingdoms of animal/vegetable into a special category--we should say "QUEENDOMS" perhaps. Dionysos Szabaios is a beer god: fermentation. Dionysos is god of yeasts, molds, fungi. Flagella, virus, microbes: the interregnum which cannot easily be classified as either animal or vegetable, such as single-celled organisms: protozoa, borelia—one of the best candidates for interstellar space travel among living forms, perfectly adapted to such conditions, according to Lilly and Sagan. Malic mold makes wine, and again Marcel Duchamp as Bodhisattva (Nine Malic Moulds in the Great Glass).
